After months of “trios-only” pressure, Bungie is finally loosening the leash. This week, the Perimeter map transforms into an experimental testing ground as the studio implements a limited-time duos mode.

Since its debut, Marathon has been a high-stakes game of numbers, often leaving solo players and pairs at the mercy of coordinated three-person fireteams.
Bungie has clearly been listening to the feedback echoing through the corridors of the community. Starting March 18, 2026, the developer is launching an experimental duos queue specifically for the Perimeter map.
Revealed by game director Joe Ziegler on X, the limited-time mode will become a permanent fixture or remain a fleeting experiment depending entirely on how the community adapts to this new, leaner meta.

The Duo Queue Experiment: Balancing the Perimeter?
Bungie is treating this as a high-stakes test phase. By limiting the Duo Queue to the Perimeter map, developers can gather granular data on how encounters flow when the player count per squad drops.
The goal is to see if the tension remains without making the map feel empty. If the telemetry looks good and the community keeps the pressure on, we could see this rollout across all zones. For now, it’s an “experimental” mode for “crews of two” with Bungie hoping to “expand” the mode in the future.
Alright everyone we’re going a bit rogue here. We have a bit of an experimental feature that’s in development we want to test and we’d love for you to help. As of Wednesday morning 3/18 at 10am PT, we’ll be enabling a limited time duos queue on Perimeter only to test how the game…

Getting In: “Jank” and Pure Science
According to Ziegler, the team is “going a bit rogue” to get this feature into players’ hands. This isn’t a polished, final release, but a live lab.
Ziegler was blunt on X, stating, “Some things will be a bit jank” because the current implementation is the “easiest way for us to get it to you all to help us test.”
Accessing the mode is straightforward but specific. You’ll need to select “Perimeter – Duo” from the zone select screen, which Ziegler notes is “not the intended UX flow” for the final version.
Crucially, there is no matchmaking for this test. You must bring a friend. As Ziegler says, “you will be matched with other duos only.” Concluding, Ziegler declares the test “FOR SCIENCE!!”
Is it Time to Squad Up?
This update makes the game infinitely more approachable for newcomers who were intimidated by the “trios-only” sweat-fest. It’s the perfect time to grab a friend and see if the extraction loop sticks.
Marathon is evolving, and for once, it feels like Bungie is actually listening to the boots on the ground.
