AAA PC games ship broken. Indies ship masterpieces.
I’ve watched this industry from both sides for over two decades: pro Unreal Tournament arenas first, then founding Allkeyshop and sitting through every launch day since. And 2024-2026 is the widest gap I’ve ever seen between AAA budgets and AAA quality.
From EA Sports FC 26‘s user-score meltdown to Starfield‘s day-one patch bloat, big-budget PC has been a rough ride. Meanwhile, 9 indies are quietly redefining what “polished” means. Here’s the Hall of Fame, and why your wallet just got a lot smarter.
The AAA Bloat: Why 2024-2026 Has Been Rough
The pattern keeps repeating: big studios ship unfinished games, patch them over the next 12 months, and hope nobody remembers launch day. A few examples from the last two years:
- EA Sports FC 26: Metacritic user scores in the low single digits, a pattern that has persisted across the franchise since the FIFA-to-FC rebrand.
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6: shipped with a multi-dozen-GB day-one patch, continuing the engine-bloat trend.
- Starfield: critical score of 83, user score crashed to the high 50s within weeks of launch.
- Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (2024): a nine-figure-budget live-service launch that lost most of its player base within weeks and forced a public write-down.
- Skull and Bones (2024): over a decade in development, launched at premium AAAA price, and struggled to hold players past the first month.
The common thread: launches optimized for shareholder calendars, not players.
Indie Revolution: The 9 Hall-of-Fame Hits of 2024-2026
Meanwhile, eight indies released in the last two years have done something rare: they shipped polished. Not “patched to polish”, polished at launch. Here they are.

Key Findings: Why Indies Are Winning in 2026
Polish-on-launch beats patch-promises
The indies above share one trait: they shipped when the developers were satisfied, not when marketing said so. Day-one patches for the 9 Hall-of-Fame indies average close to zero GB. Compare that to recent AAA launches regularly requiring multi-dozen-GB patches before the game boots.
Steam “Very Positive” is the new gold standard
The foundation indies that paved the way, listed below, all sit around 94-98% positive on Steam. Their 2024-2026 successors inherit that standard.
The price gap is massive
Most indies on this list retail at 15-30 EUR/USD. Most AAA releases retail at 70-80 EUR/USD, and require another 20-40 for the battle pass, or the season pass, or the “Ultimate Edition” upgrade. Before you buy the next broken AAA, compare prices on these instead.
The Foundations: Indies That Paved the Way
The 2024-2026 Hall of Fame didn’t happen in a vacuum. Seven earlier indies built the template that today’s hits refine:
