Rumor claims Microsoft cancels Zenimax Blackbird MMO to make way for Fallout 5!

Fallout is the famous RPG series created by Interplay Entertainment. With the series acquired by Bethesda Softworks since 2004, it offers a series of role-playing games that take us to a retro-futuristic universe. With a style inspired by the 40s-50s, the various installments take place from 2161 (or 2102 for Fallout 76) to 2287 (Fallout 4).

Microsoft Cancels Blackbird to Make Way for Fallout 5

These past few weeks have been marked by numerous cuts from Microsoft. With cuts to staff but also canceled games, projects, and studios. But it seems there’s also new movement, with the green light for the development of Fallout 5. News that comes from journalist Jez Corden during The Xbox Two podcast.

Corden seems to confirm that Microsoft has decided to cancel the Zenimax MMO (Blackbird) to make way for the development of Fallout 5. But the most interesting news seems to be that Xbox wants to assign the project to another team. Since Bethesda is mainly busy with the development of The Elder Scrolls VI.

Fallout 5 or The Elder Scrolls VI: Which Will Be Released First?

An interesting piece of news if true. Seeing Fallout 5 as a more “safe” project for Microsoft, but especially the potential choice of a new team to entrust the project to. With many fans who would appreciate seeing a dedicated studio. Including the dream of seeing the return of some key figures from the series since the Interplay days.

While it’s true that the release of TES V now dates back to 2011, the new remake/remaster of Oblivion could see TES VI released later. That said, it’s not a given that Fallout 5 could arrive sooner. And in fact, it seems that a potential remake of Fallout 3 has been entrusted again to Virtuos. Potentially in 2026 following Season 2 of the TV series. Fallout 5 and TES VI are therefore still a long way off from anything concrete.

In Conclusion

An interesting piece of news with strong potential for the new installments of the Bethesda IPs, and especially Microsoft. Whether it’s a new title of The Elder Scrolls or Fallout, it seems we’ll still have to wait quite a while.

With Microsoft seeming to have particularly appreciated the Oblivion Remake, with potential similar treatment for Fallout 3. Possibly during the release period of Season 2 of the TV series. And what do you guys think? Let us know in the comments!
