Archetype Entertainment has released new work-in-progress gameplay footage for its upcoming sci-fi action RPG, Exodus. The latest preview focuses on environmental interaction and exploration mechanics within a treacherous subterranean zone.
The studio, composed of several industry veterans, continues to showcase granular mechanics ahead of a larger presentation planned for later this year. This latest footage provides a clearer look at how the main protagonist interacts with alien infrastructure.
- Archetype Entertainment released new gameplay for sci-fi RPG Exodus, showcasing the Guarding Maze and its physics-defying alien structures.
- Players can use the Eruption gauntlet ability to manipulate “livestone,” transforming raw alien matter into functional pathways or combat tools.
- Despite studio co-founder James Ohlen stepping down due to burnout, development remains fully on track for an early 2027 launch window.
What Is the Guarding Maze in Exodus?
In EXODUS, The Guarding Maze is a collapsed, underground Celestial facility located deep beneath the surface of the planet Lidon. It serves as a high-stakes exploration zone where players must navigate unstable architectural ruins, deep chasms, and environmental hazards alongside companions Tom and Phaedra to uncover ancient technology.
According to the official Exodus Steam Community Update, the environment itself acts as a primary adversary in this zone. The architecture defies standard physics, requiring deliberate movement to avoid lethal falls.
The footage also offers a brief glimpse of a Gath, a Changeling entity engineered by the Celestials, confirming that players will face active external threats while navigating these structural anomalies.
How Do Livestone Mechanics Alter Combat and Exploration?
Livestone mechanics allow players to actively reshape the game world by transforming raw alien material into functional pathways or offensive tools. By utilizing the protagonist’s gauntlet-driven “Eruption” ability, players can clear heavy debris blocking forward progress or forge solid bridges across massive chasms.
This environmental manipulation extends directly into the game’s combat loops as well. As detailed in a prior Ghost City Gameplay Briefing, the Eruption ability can launch hostile forces into the air during close-quarters engagements.
Players can complement these abilities with modular weaponry like the Recycler, which alternates between a rapid-fire Repeater mode for mid-range skirmishes and a high-impact Shredder mode for close-range target neutralization. Upgrades and ammunition can be managed mid-expedition via deployable Waystations.

Studio Leadership and the Path to the 2027 Launch Window
The steady stream of gameplay updates arrives amid notable organizational shifts at Austin-based Archetype Entertainment. Studio co-founder and veteran BioWare designer James Ohlen stepped down from his executive role earlier this year.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Ohlen cited severe burnout from managing both the creative direction and executive responsibilities of a massive budget title over a six-year period. He clarified that his departure was a personal health decision rather than a reflection of development troubles.
The studio’s production pipeline remains stable despite the transition in leadership. Archetype Entertainment is currently working toward an extended gameplay reveal scheduled for this summer, keeping the title on schedule for its projected early 2027 release window on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
