Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate (DQ12) is the new main chapter in the series. Specifically, the twelfth chapter, first mentioned by the creator Yuji Horii at the CEDEC + KYUSHU 2018. Following the launch of the 11th chapter in 2017.
With DQ12 officially announced by Square Enix during the special 35th Anniversary Live Stream of the series in 2021. Dragon Quest XII: Yūji Horii reassures about the game’s development
At the Naples Comicon (Italy), held on 4 May 2025, one of the special guests was none other than Yūji Horii. He gave an interview to Gamereactor, where editor-in-chief David Caballero asked him some questions. Among them, some about the infamous Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.
Horii states that he cannot share concrete details, such as about the battle system, characters, or story. However, he confirms he’s working hard on the development, as well as a potential release for the new Nintendo Switch 2. He also shared a small piece of news about a potential Chrono Trigger Remake, following the strong demand from fans. With 2025 marking the 30th Anniversary of the legendary chapter.

Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate – What We Know So Far
It seems that the development of DQ12 is going well, with Square Enix wanting to keep everything under control for now. According to the official information shared by SE, we know that the HEXADRIVE team will work alongside the Orca development team. Team Orca was, back in September 2021, looking for staff with experience in Unreal Engine 5.
For creator Yuji Horii, DQ12 represents an important project, paying tribute to Koichi Sugiyama and Akira Toriyama, respectively the composer and character designer for the series. Both passed away, in September 2021 and March 2024. The game could be released in 2026, marking the 40th Anniversary of the series.
