Double Fine Productions is funding its independent future through ongoing sales of its back catalog and a new crowdfunding campaign. CEO Tim Schafer confirmed that the studio retained full publishing rights to all its games, meaning direct purchases now generate direct revenue to keep the company operational.

Schafer detailed the studio’s financial strategy during a recent appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily. Double Fine currently possesses a limited financial runway following its separation from Microsoft and the subsequent layoffs affecting 25% of its workforce.

The developer needs to secure external game deals to survive long-term. Schafer encouraged players to purchase existing titles to extend the studio’s operational timeline while the team pitches new concepts to publishers.

The Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Kickstarter is a public game jam campaign launching on August 31. Backers will vote on internal pitches from Double Fine developers, leading to the creation of four playable prototypes and one small commercial game.

The crowdfunding campaign marks Double Fine’s return to its independent roots. Video production team 2 Player Productions will document the entire creative process for a new behind-the-scenes documentary series.

Past Amnesia Fortnight events generated successful titles like Costume Quest and Stacking. Double Fine aims to use this community-driven approach to discover its next major project while securing short-term funding.

Kiln Updates and the CWA Union Petition Withdrawal

Double Fine continues to support its existing multiplayer titles while navigating internal structural changes. Schafer announced that the 2026 pottery-based multiplayer game Kiln will receive new maps and modes. Double Fine plans to drop the price of Kiln next week to attract a wider player base.

Regarding studio personnel, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) confirmed that Double Fine workers withdrew their union petition. Workers originally filed the petition in May before the Microsoft split, but the CWA provided no further explanation for the sudden withdrawal.
