Amazon Prime Video’s live-action God of War series is undergoing a major recast. Following an unexpected injury to Ryan Hurst, Dave Bautista is reportedly stepping into the lead role of Kratos to keep the production on track.

- Dave Bautista is in negotiations to star as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s live-action God of War series.
- Original Kratos actor Ryan Hurst suffered a severe bicep injury on set, forcing the studio to recast the lead role.
- Due to the casting reset, filming targets a production return in the fall of 2026.
Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast as Kratos in the upcoming God of War TV series, suffered a torn bicep on set, delaying production and leading Amazon to pursue Dave Bautista as a replacement so filming can resume by fall 2026.
According to Variety, Hurst’s injury would require 4-6 months of recovery and up to a year to regain full strength. That means Bautista is due to come in to prevent the show’s delay.
Why is Dave Bautista Replacing Ryan Hurst as Kratos?
Actor Ryan Hurst sustained a severe bicep tear while performing a stunt during production in Vancouver. The injury required surgery and a lengthy recovery period, prompting Amazon MGM Studios to recast the lead role to avoid delaying the project until 2027.
Before the incident, Hurst had successfully filmed four episodes of the series. The demanding physical nature of the character meant waiting for his full recovery was not viable for the studio.
Dave Bautista, known for his imposing physique and existing relationship with Amazon Studios, quickly emerged as the top candidate to take over.
The live-action series is based on the critically acclaimed franchise that originates on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
How Does the Recast Affect the Series Timeline?
Producers initially planned to resume filming in mid-August following the initial delay, but reshoots have altered that trajectory. With four completed episodes now requiring new footage with a new lead, the studio has adjusted its target dates.
Amazon and Sony aim to have production fully operational again by fall 2026. The creative team, led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, remains intact alongside the rest of the established ensemble cast.
Will the God of War Series Follow the Games?
The television series will closely adapt the narrative established in the 2018 God of War game and its sequel, Ragnarök. The story focuses on Kratos and his son Atreus navigating the harsh Norse pantheon to fulfill a deeply personal quest.
Both the 2018 title and God of War Ragnarök are readily available for under €70 on our comparison pages above, providing the complete story foundation for the upcoming television project.
