Chrono Trigger Remake? We’re Not Allowed to Ask
Now 30 years old, Chrono Trigger remains one of the most beloved RPGs ever created, and hopes of a full remake by Square Enix are high after legendary developer Yuji Horii recently refused to rule it out.
Initially launched in 1995 for the Super NES, Chrono Trigger is considered a “timeless RPG classic,” and this year, developer Square Enix is celebrating its 30th anniversary with various projects, leading fans to believe a remake may be announced soon.
With Square Enix remaining silent about any potential remake, one of the RPG’s original developers, and Dragon Quest creator, Yuji Horii, has now told fans in a YouTube discussion program that “you shouldn’t ask that” when asked if there is a remake on the way.
The Unofficial Gag Order
Despite Horii revealing he will “get told off” for talking about a potential Chrono Trigger remake during the discussion program, it hasn’t stopped rumors and hope among fans from building, as many believe Square Enix is keeping things quiet so it can announce the project in its own time.
Fuelling the fire, publishing executive Kazuhiko Torishima jokingly teased fans with “there is, there is” as Horii played it down.
The Legacy of the Dream Team
Chrono Trigger is famous for its “Dream Team” developers, creator Yuji Horii, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, and Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.
The RPG’s non-linear story, multiple endings, and Active Time Battle system make it a critical masterpiece. Fans want to see the classic art style and time-traveling narrative remade in Square Enix’s signature HD-2D visual style in line with the studio’s recent games.
Following the Final Fantasy Blueprint
Square Enix has found massive success and renewed energy through remakes and modernizations, including the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. The recent remakes are also sparking rumors among fans, who want to see other classic favorites, like Chrono Trigger, reimagined.
While not definitive proof, the fact that even some of the most iconic figures in the gaming industry are not allowed to discuss it suggests that the project may be real. We may potentially see an official announcement once Square Enix wraps up its work on other games.
