Mages of Mystralia is a decent adventure game. It’s also a damn good puzzle game too, keeping you on your toes throughout. Spell creation is well thought out and the pacing is spot on with the difficulty rising at a beginner friendly yet challenging rate. However, whilst the design is great on paper and I found no technical problems, there’s no special hook to really wow or truly immerse you enough for a second playthrough.
I like magic a lot, but even I need something unique to look at, or a fantastic story told, to really keep me interested.
Mages of Mystralia is a pretty, polished experience bolstered by an excellent spin on combat. The world is bright and cheerful, the exploration of the land is rewarding, and the spell system is great. Chalk up another success story for the Canadian Media Fund and one for Borealys Games.
