Celeste is an indie game released in 2018 by the team at Maddy Makes Games, led by Madison Thorson. In reality, the title debuted as part of a Game Jam in 2015 with the game called Celeste Classic, created and completed in just 4 days. The idea was well received, leading the team to further develop the title, drawing from the experience of their previous game, Towerfall, along with influences from classic platformer titles.
Madeline, the protagonist of Celeste, lives near Mount Celeste and decides to embark on the endeavor of climbing to the summit to conquer her fears and as a means to restore her self-esteem. The gameplay takes the form of a rather challenging platformer with a fairly balanced and adjustable learning curve. What has definitely struck a chord with the title is its underlying message about anxiety, depression, and the daily struggles that Madeline must face. These are themes close to the hearts of many fans of the game, which have further propelled its success.
