Borderlands 4 (BL4) is the new installment in the famous co-op FPS series by Gearbox Software and 2K. A beloved series born in 2009 with the first game, it achieved huge success, especially with the second one in 2011. It also spawned some spin-offs like the Telltale Games series and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.

This fourth main installment takes place after the events of 3, taking us to the planet of Kairos. The chapter was officially announced with the TGA 2024 teaser and was initially scheduled for launch at the end of September 2025. But instead, it saw an early release by 2 weeks. Borderlands 4 Now Available on the Major Platforms

After a fateful wait, today finally marks the official launch of Borderlands 4. The famous first-person co-op looter shooter from Gearbox. With the fourth main installment officially debuting also on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S today, September 12, 2025. Preceded by yesterday’s PC launch.

A launch that the Gearbox and 2K team are celebrating with the official trailer. A trailer with a strong cinematic feel that shows us the 4 new Vault Hunters in action, amidst chaos, explosions, and dismemberment. It also features the famous Claptrap and Mad Moxxi, as well as the fearsome Timekeeper and his armies.

 

Borderlands 4: Gameplay, Features, and Fan Feedback

Certainly a much-anticipated installment for big fans of the series. Especially after the numerous details and info not just about the 4 playable characters. But especially about a more serious plot and less incessant humor, which was heavily criticized in 3. Among the new features we have:

  • 4 New Hunters: As always, playing as a new group. With Vex as a Siren able to summon Phase Minions, Rafa as an Exo-Soldier like a classic Soldier. Among the Forgeknight, a Berserker style, and the Gravitar Harlowe with a mix of gadget-based abilities.
  • Open World: Bringing a fully open-world game world to the series for the first time. Eliminating loading areas for a seamless experience. Plus, you can call vehicles on the fly and there are plenty of bases to capture.
  • Level Scaling and Gameplay: With the open world, we’ll therefore have the level-scaling system for enemies and drops. On the gameplay side, there’s a major shift towards making abilities even more useful. And the Ordinance Slot dedicated to grenades and heavy weapons.

With the first feedback and reviews from series fans already coming in. They’re pretty happy with the more serious story, closer to the first Borderlands. As well as a decidedly less relentless “humor”. Although it seems the mix of Open World and the use of UE5 along with Denuvo is causing mediocre performance on PC. Less noticeable on Console, but it does raise concerns about the Switch 2 Version arriving on October 3, 2025.

In Conclusion

So, the initial feedback for Borderlands 4 isn’t as bad as many feared. There’s the classic performance issue from using a poorly optimized UE5. On the plus side, it delivers an adventure that many already consider way better than 3.
