Balatro is available on the Steam Store as part of the Deck Builder Fest lineup, with a 10% discount available until 1st April 2024. It’s a rather modest discount, but we’re still talking about a game that has recently been released and has a very low list price, which, thanks to the 10% discount, brings it down to €12.59. Balatro is a card game developed by the solo dev at LocalThunk and is indeed a roguelike deck builder based on Poker. This makes it accessible to a broader audience while still using typical roguelike mechanics. It’s a game with unique mechanics that combines elements from other more or less famous card games. In fact, Balatro has been conceived since 2021, with the developer drawing inspiration from many games including Cantonese-style card games and Big Two, as well as Slay The Spire as the main source for the roguelike aspect. It was released on 20 February 2024, with an excellent initial response.
In Balatro, players will take on the role of a participant in an illegal poker tournament, dealing with combos and unexpected moves, all accompanied by a retro design with psychedelic effects, aiming to keep winning every round! Balatro’s great success has led LocalThunk and publisher Playstack to bring Balatro to Android and iOS soon.
