Exclusive: 1001 Threads of Mizan Hands-On Gamescom Preview Shows Promising Flying Carpet Co-Op Action
Key Takeaways
  • 1001 Threads of Mizan combines grounded co-op melee combat with dynamic flying carpet traversal against colossal mythological bosses.
  • Developed by veterans from BioWare, Bungie, and Ubisoft, the game features three distinct playable heroes with unique weapon loadouts.
  • While the core combat and artistic ambition show clear promise, the evasion and dodging mechanics require tightening before release.

Revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live by MBC Game Studio, a new developer formed by veterans from BioWare, Bungie, and Ubisoft Montreal, 1001 Threads of Mizan comes from an established team.

While at Gamescom, we had a chance to test the game with an exclusive hands-on preview session, trying its aerial traversal mechanics as we attempted to survive against massive mythical adversaries.

How does the flying carpet combat work in 1001 Threads of Mizan?

The flying carpet mechanic functions as a dual-purpose system for rapid aerial traversal and dynamic combat evasion, allowing players to dodge massive attacks from colossal jinn bosses.

Players utilize the carpet to seamlessly transition between grounded strikes and aerial maneuvers during the one-to-three-player drop-in, drop-out cooperative sessions.

MBC Game Studio designed three distinct heroes—Yusra, Malik, and Sufyan—to anchor the combat system. The characters wield unique move-sets encompassing shield, sword, and spear or bow loadouts.

Creative Director Lars Bonde stated the studio wanted to bring a sense of connection into a fast-paced, combat-driven gameplay experience.

The development team built the traversal system to give players a tangible sense of speed while maintaining precise tactical control over their respective loadouts.

What were the main strengths and weaknesses of the Gamescom demo?

The Gamescom show floor presentation revealed a game with immense creative potential and notable technical hurdles.

The Gamescom demo effectively demonstrated the ambition of MBC Game Studio, particularly during the two boss battles.

While combat was fluid and attacks felt good from the different characters we tried, Yusra, Malik, and Sufyan, dodging felt unintuitive and less effective.

Ultimately, it was only a demo and we expect dodging and other areas to improve before launch. Otherwise, it’s going to be a very challenging co-op game as we took a lot more unnecessary damage due to unresponsive controls.

MBC Game Studio plans to launch the title simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

Is 1001 Threads of Mizan worth keeping on your radar?

1001 Threads of Mizan is clearly a highly ambitious project with a compelling mythological framework.

The core action holds clear potential for cooperative gaming fans. The foundation established by the veteran development team shows promise despite early technical rough edges.

The Gamescom demo highlights the need for significant mechanical refinement. The story presentation felt slow, and the evasion mechanics need tightening before the official release.
