Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family Plan Will End In August

As we say goodbye to the Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family Plan in less than a month, what does this mean to your current subscription? Will there be a refund?

It was only the second half of last year when Microsoft rolled out the Xbox Game Pass Family & Friends Plan which allows you to share your Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription with up to 4 other people. This means that you can all play the same games, access the same content, and enjoy the same benefits while splitting the bill for a regular Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

While it looked like it was slowly spreading over to more territories, it was finally announced that this was only a “preview program”.

For the plan’s subscribers in participating countries Ireland, Colombia, New Zealand, Sweden, Israel, Chile, Hungary, and South Africa who still have months left before their plan expires, here’s what this news will mean to you.

When does Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family Plan end?

The Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family Plan will cease to exist on August 15, 2023. If you are an existing plan holder and have not heard of the news, you may check your email. As per Xbox Support timeline, all Primary and Secondary members were emailed of the change on July 14, 2023.

Apart from Microsoft is no longer accepting new registrations for the plan, primary account holders will also no longer be able to add new members to their accounts starting July 17, 2023. From this point, you have a month left to enjoy the plan’s shared service.

Will I get a refund for my Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family Plan?

No refund will be given but there is compensation which most current subscribers are happy about. So instead of money back, primary and secondary members will be given their personal Xbox Game Pass Ultimate codes and it’s longer than their remaining time for the Friends and Family Plan!

To be eligible for this, you must have an active Family and Friends subscription on August 15, 2023 and you can only redeem the code with the Xbox account you used to participate in. For a more detailed view, check below.

Will there be an Xbox Game Pass shared plan in the future?

There is no announcement or even a hint as to a similar type of subscription with Xbox. Microsoft only vaguely says that they will use the learnings from this “preview program” to see what they can offer in the future to people worldwide.
