Australia bans upcoming fighting game under strict content guidelines, sparking controversy and comparisons to past gaming bans
Australia’s strict video game classification system has once again stirred controversy, this time targeting the upcoming fighting game Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact. The game has been denied classification by the Australian Classification Board (ACB), effectively banning it from being sold and marketed within the country. While the ACB has not explicitly stated its reasons for this decision, past incidents provide some insight into why.
Historically, the ACB has refused classification for games that depict drug use with gameplay benefits, graphic sexual violence, or the sexualization of characters appearing underage. A notable example is Mortal Kombat 9 which was banned in Australia upon release in 2011 due to its extreme violence and gore. The game’s fatalities were deemed to exceed the standards permissible under the country’s classification system at the time which lacked an R18+ category for games. It wasn’t until 2013, when the R18+ rating was introduced, that Mortal Kombat 9 and other similarly banned titles could be legally released.
Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact Gets Banned
In this latest case, Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact, developed by Eighting and published by Arc System Works, faces similar scrutiny. Although specific details of the game’s “banned” content have not been confirmed, speculation suggests it may involve themes or depictions that run afoul of ACB guidelines. For example, depictions of underage characters in suggestive contexts or excessive violence are common grounds for classification refusal. Given the game’s anime roots and mature themes in the Hunter x Hunter franchise, these theories are plausible.
The ACB’s actions reflect broader concerns about balancing creative freedom and regional content standards, a recurring debate in the gaming industry.
Previous examples, like the initial bans of Disco Elysium: The Final Cut and South Park: The Stick of Truth, show that the board’s rulings often spark backlash and lead to modifications or appeals. Whether Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact will undergo similar adjustments or remain banned in Australia remains to be seen.
