Nearly ten years after its initial release, The Last of Us Part I is getting a remake that releases this coming September.
It also comes eight years after Naughty Dog released a remaster for The Last of Us for PS4 in 2014.
However, as more remakes of our favorite video games are published at full price, it forces the question, are remakes of games worth $60 or more?
First, let me just say I’m not against video game remakes, I bought into and loved the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes, and I can’t wait for the System Shock remake.
However, these games were released in the 90s, with System Shock first released in 1994, Resident Evil 2 in 1998, and Resident Evil 3 in 1999.
Mostly due to nostalgia, I bought both the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes for $60, and I have to say, I wasn’t disappointed.
I was happy to pay this, partly because those games were released decades ago, and to play them, I would need to pull out my old PlayStation console or download an emulator.
It’s also worth pointing out that remaking a video game from decades ago allows for changes to be made to the story, characters, and features developers first envisioned.
The new remakes of the RE2 and RE3 games are improved graphically, technically, and updated for modern hardware, making them almost entirely new games.
The same cannot be said for The Last of Us Part 1 or other remakes.
Most remakes are for games launched many years ago, and releasing them for a new audience and current technology benefits everyone.
However, can you say that about a game released less than ten years ago that has even been remastered for the PS4, which most PlayStation users are still playing?
Well, that depends on you and how much you love the game.
Let’s look at recent remake fails and consider what made them worse than the original games.
EA launched SimCity in 2013 in an attempt to relaunch the series that made the city-building genre so popular.
Unfortunately, EA being EA, decided to release SimCity as an online-only game, which ultimately failed as many could not even connect to the servers to play the game at launch.
By the time EA added an offline mode to SimCity a few months later, the game was already dead, and there was no saving it from destruction.
Don’t worry; EA didn’t stop with SimCity, as Dungeon Keeper soon followed and was also a complete disaster.
Following the “live service” trend, EA essentially turned Dungeon Keeper into a mobile game with a horrific number of in-app purchases.
The original Dungeon Keeper was not a live service game or a mobile game; along with other “innovations,” it practically died at launch.
Dungeon Keeper and SimCity failed due to changes and features that fans did not like, whereas Warcraft 3: Reforged from Blizzard failed because of a lack of features.
When Blizzard launched Warcraft 3: Reforged, it did so without competitive ladder matches, custom campaigns, updated cutscenes, and other features.
And remember, Blizzard promised all of these and more would be in the game at release, but due to lack of resources, they decided not to “steer too far from the original game.”
I would argue these games were hated, not so much due to lack or addition of features, but due to nostalgia from playing the originals.
Nostalgia is powerful, and releasing a remaster or a remake of a previously popular game can lose long-time fans.
It’s essential to know the difference between a remaster and a remake when considering how much a video game is worth.
A remaster is a digital revamp of a game for new hardware, including updated graphics, character models, and environment design.
In-game mechanics can also get updates, but the main feature is the updated visuals.
A remake is built from the ground up, often with a new engine, to improve and add features such as graphics, UI, characters, story, content, controls, and much more.
So, is a remake of The Last of Us worth buying?
It depends on you and how much you’re willing to spend on a game you’ve already played and most likely want due to nostalgia.
