Showa American Story: New Trailer for the Unique B-Movie Action RPG
After a 2-year silence, the team at NEKCOM Entertainment returns with force, presenting a trailer for their Showa American Story, a zombie-themed Action RPG with a distinctive B-Movie vibe.
Showa American Story is a post-apocalyptic Action RPG created by the team at NEKCOM Entertainment and published by 2P Games. A game that is part love letter to the classics of the 80s-90s and part pure parody of Otaku culture, with many references to big classics, making for a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Offering an alternate story where Japan has purchased American territory, drastically changing local culture. Following Chouko Chigusa, resurrected and now searching for her sister. An action-packed game wielding a katana and firearms, battling zombie hordes and various enemies encountered along the way.
Showa American Story: Official Announcement Trailer Revealed
After 2 years of silence, NEKCOM returns with a new 5-minute trailer for Showa American Story. The Chinese development team brings us to an entirely different America, colonized by the Japanese superpower. Presenting a post-apocalyptic game world with numerous references to Japanese and 80s-90s classics.
The story follows Choko in the 66th year of the Showa period. In an America practically acquired by Japan, importing and altering local culture. After a disaster leading to a Zombie Apocalypse, Chouko Chigusa awakens with special powers. Searching for her sister, Choko travels through what remains of North America, facing dangers, zombies, and bizarre events.
Showa American Story: New Trailer Breakdown
NEKCOM truly indulged in creating this game world. Combining visions of stereotypes, classic movies and anime, and otaku culture from the 80s to the 2000s. From the 5-minute trailer alone, there’s an impressive amount of references to classics, Japanese and otherwise, which many will surely notice. Some examples include:
- Kamen Rider: A motorcycle very similar to Kamen Rider with an After Human logo.
- Dragon Ball: A nod to the final scene where Son Goku defeats King Piccolo.
- Cities: New York renamed Neo Yokohama, San Francisco, and Las Vegas recolored in Japanese style. Austin is now Neo Tokyo-4, a clear reference to Neon Genesis Evangelion and Neo Tokyo-3.
- Astroboy and Cat’s Eye: Two NPCs dressed as Astroboy and Rui Kisugi (Kelly) from Cat’s Eye.
- Fist of the North Star: Numerous appearances, with a notable Great General of the Big Four. Clearly Raoh (albeit wearing Kenshiro‘s outfit) on horseback with Kokuoh, here as the Black Giraffe Daikokuten.
- Texas Governor Gokou: A name similar to Goku but with the features resembling Senator Armstrong from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, with flowing blonde hair.
Showa American Story: What Awaits and When to Expect New Updates
In an interview with IGN, Creative Director XY.Luo discusses the various characters we will encounter. Throughout the adventure, we will explore different regions of America, facing zombie hordes. Equipped with primary weapons like swords and firearms, and a powerful drill similar to the Giga Drill from Gurren Lagann.
Additionally, there will be various minigames and even camper customization. A game that has certainly captured the attention of many, with a B-Movie style reminiscent of the OneeChanbara series and several games by Suda51. With an over-the-top style, the team at NEKCOM has confirmed the 2025 release, with more news expected by December 2024.
