Critical Praise Meets Harsh Commercial Realities
Year 2026, with all its highly anticipated titles, continues to not run out of layoff news. The latest to have to go through it is ZA/UM Studio, the studio widely known for Disco Elysium. The news comes after a not-so-great stretch for the company which has dealt with canceled projects, legal disputes, and leadership changes over the past several years.
The team has recently launched its latest title, Zero Parades For Dead Spies. The title gained widespread critical acclaim but unfortunately, that did not translate to commercial success.
On July 18, 2026, ZA/UM Studio announced that it is laying off more than 32 employees, saying, “we have served redundancy or at-risk notices impacting up to 32 of our colleagues across all departments.” According to the announcement, while Zero Parades performed well with critics, it failed to meet its commercial targets. As a result, ZA/UM said it is no longer able to sustain the studio in its current form.
The studio also reassured its community that the downsizing process is being carried out in continuous work and dialogue with representatives of the ZA/UM Workers’ Alliance. In the same statement, it expressed hope that the affected employees would quickly find new opportunities and encouraged any studios currently hiring to consider them.

While Zero Parades found plenty of praise from critics, its commercial performance serves as another reminder that critical success doesn’t always guarantee financial stability. Sadly, it’s also another example of the reality many developers continue to face and it likely won’t be the last layoff announcement the industry sees this year.
