Souls-Like games have been gaining popularity in recent years. The first games in this genre were the Dark Souls games by From Software. One of the many reasons for their popularity is the open-world Souls-Like game Elden Ring. This game has sold over 25 million copies and was well-received by fans of the Souls-Like genre. Now, the hunger for more Souls-Like games is huge. That’s why today we’ll introduce you to some Souls-Like games that are either releasing this year or have already been released.
Important Information
|
The first game we want to talk about today is Black Myth: Wukong. This game tells the story of Chinese mythology. More specifically, it is based on the story of “Journey to the West,” one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. The main character of the game is Wukong, the Monkey King.
In the game, you will encounter and fight various monsters from Chinese mythology. Additionally, you can expect stunning landscape and character design. Besides your staff, which you use in battles, you can also use magic spells. These spells enhance your weapons or grant you new abilities. By strategically using your spells, you will be able to defeat your opponents faster.
Each character you meet in the game has a backstory that you can discover through dialogues. This reveals the motives for your enemies’ battles, giving them a purpose and adding more depth to the game.
Next up is Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn. This game is less than a month old, having been released on July 18, 2024. It was developed by A44 Games. In this game, you fight with firearms against gods and other enemies to save humanity. The gods have sent their armies to Earth to wipe out humanity. The land of Kian is under siege, and the City of Dawn is on the brink of destruction.
Now it’s time for humanity to fight back. That’s why humanity unites and builds a large army skilled in swordsmanship. You are accompanied by Enki, who guides you through the world and supports you in battle with his magical abilities. The game combines Souls-Like elements with fast-paced, dynamic gunfights. Over time, you will unlock new equipment and, of course, be able to upgrade your weapons.
The next game we want to introduce to you is Rise of the Ronin. Although this game was released a few months ago, it definitely deserves a spot on this list. The game was released on March 22 exclusively for PlayStation 5. It was developed by Team NINJA, who also developed Nioh. Rise of the Ronin is set in 19th century Japan, a time heavily influenced by war. This is an open-world game where you can explore the vast, open world of Japan and encounter many different enemies.
You play as a nameless warrior who resists the enemies from the West. As you journey through the ravaged land, marked by death, disease, and political unrest, you unknowingly hold the fate of the entire country in your hands. Depending on how you act in the game, the outcome of the game will change.
Now let’s talk about a game that takes place in a very different setting from most Souls-Like games—underwater. In Another Crab’s Treasure, you play as a crab, as the game’s name suggests. You play as Kril, who has gone into debt and had to give up his shell as compensation. But of course, you want to get your beloved shell back. So, you strike a deal where you can reclaim your shell in exchange for a treasure, and thus your adventure begins.
But of course, you can’t live without a shell on your back. As an alternative, you use whatever the ocean has to offer. Due to human activity, the ocean is filled with trash, which you can use as a shell. The various objects you can use as a shell have different strengths and weaknesses, and of course, they can all break.
The trash has become a status symbol for the deep-sea inhabitants and is also used by many as a weapon. However, trash also has a downside—a dangerous infection that turns everyone into dangerous and wild enemies. On your quest for the treasure, you will have to defeat many different enemies and bosses using various weapons. This game has already been released, so you can buy and try it out right away.
Last but not least, let’s talk about Phantom Blade Zero. This is another game set in China. The game is currently being developed by S-GAME and is expected to be released later this year. Unfortunately, there is no exact release date yet, so we’ll have to wait. Phantom Blade Zero is a semi-open-world game, meaning it has several large areas for you to explore. The game combines Chinese martial arts with steampunk-style machinery.
You play as the elite assassin Soul, who works for the powerful organization “The Order.” You are framed for the murder of the organization’s patriarch, severely injured, and have only 66 days to live. During this time, you must fight powerful enemies and monsters to uncover the true mastermind.
