Final Fantasy XIV is Coming to Switch 2 in August

The recently held Final Fantasy Fan Fest brought some great news to Nintendo players as Final Fantasy XIV has officially been announced to reach Switch 2 in August 2026. There’s no exact release date just yet but the window alone is enough to get fans marking their calendars and preparing for the jump to a new system.

Alongside the confirmation, Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu also shared that a free early access period is planned which is expected to run for about a month before the full release. It is particularly good to point out the word “free” here because how the subscription actually works for the Switch 2 version isn’t exactly what fans would have expected.

Basically, players will need a completely separate subscription just to play on the Switch 2. So if you already have an existing sub for PlayStation, Xbox, or PC, you can’t just log in and play. You will need a dedicated Switch 2 subscription on top of it.
