Electronic Arts is continuing its massive cleanup, and a new victim has just been added to the list. The racing game Grid (2019) is set to lose all its online features in just a few days. Here are the details on this imminent shutdown and what it means for your virtual garage.
End of the Road for Grid Multiplayer
Another server shutdown is looming at Electronic Arts. This time, it’s Grid (2019), the racing title developed by Codemasters, that is preparing to bow out.
The developers have confirmed that the plug will be pulled very soon. Specifically, all multiplayer-related features will disappear permanently on December 19.
If you own the game, don’t worry: single-player modes and the campaign will remain accessible.
However, this serves as yet another reminder that connected games rarely live forever. You have very little time left to enjoy online races before the checkered flag drops for good.
A Massive Wave of Closures at EA
Unfortunately, this announcement won’t surprise those familiar with the publisher. Grid (2019) is a title that, despite winning an award at Gamescom, received mixed reviews upon release.
It failed to establish a lasting presence against the competition. EA has decided to pull the plug, extending a dark streak that began in early 2025. The publisher has ended services for numerous titles recently, especially on mobile and within its back catalog.
In January alone, nine games disappeared, including Rory McIlroy PGA Tour and the dearly missed The Simpsons: Tapped Out.
Here are a few of the franchises recently affected:
- Sports: UFC 3, NCAA 14, and several Madden titles.
- Racing: Various Need for Speed games, Dirt 3, Dirt Showdown, and Grid Autosport.
Grid (2019) effectively becomes the latest title to join this digital graveyard before the end of the year.
Grid Legends and Upcoming Departures in 2026
There is still a glimmer of hope for fans of the license. The disappearance of Grid’s multiplayer does not mean the death of the franchise.
Grid Legends, released in 2022, remains fully active. It still benefits from support and stands as the best modern alternative while waiting for a potential sequel.
However, the respite will be short-lived for other communities. As early as January 2026, two other big names will vanish from the radar:
- Anthem: BioWare’s ambitious but aborted project.
- NBA Live 19: A shutdown that will leave EA basketball fans with no online options.
Barring a last-minute surprise, EA seems intent on taking a break for the end of this year before resuming the cleanup next year.
In Conclusion
It is always sad to see servers close, even for older games. It raises serious questions about the preservation of our gaming experiences. With EA receiving major backlash over the recent wave of shutdowns, with likely more to come in 2026.
