Following its departure from Xbox, Double Fine lays off 23 employees to adjust to the financial challenges of operating independently.

Double Fine Productions has gone through another major transition as staying independent is proving to be just as challenging as breaking away from a publisher. After regaining control of the studio and its IPs, the developer is now making difficult decisions to keep the company afloat. One of those decisions comes in the form of another round of layoffs, now affecting 23 employees.

Double Fine is Scaling Back its Team

Double Fine’s journey to survival is not over yet. The studio may have dodged a shutdown after regaining its independence from Xbox Game Studios and walking away with ownership of all its IPs, but it still has to scale back to sustain itself. Independence gives the team full creative control over its future but it also means taking on the financial risks that come with running a studio without the backing of a major publisher.

In a post recently shared by the company, Double Fine announced that 23 employees have been laid off as part of an effort to support the studio’s survival. The decision is undoubtedly a painful one but it reflects the reality of operating as an independent developer. Without Microsoft’s financial support, difficult choices like reducing staff become an unfortunate but inevitable part of keeping the business running.

Double Fine has built one of the most respected indie catalogs in the industry. The original Psychonauts became a cult classic, while Psychonauts 2 earned widespread critical acclaim years later. More recently, both Keeper and Kiln have also received praise critically but unfortunately didn’t translate to commercial success.

No matter how well a game is reviewed, sales are ultimately what keep a studio operating. And their last two releases didn’t give much in that department.

With a leaner team in place, the hope is that Double Fine can focus its resources on its next project and deliver a game that connects with a much larger audience.
