Xbox 360 Just Had A Surprise Update in 2025

That’s why this latest update, first spotted on the Xbox 360 subreddit, sparked such a reaction. According to the post, the dashboard now displays properly proportioned thumbnails, replacing the previously stretched-out images. A noticeably cleaner, more modern look.
On top of that, two new ads appeared on the dashboard. One showcases new Xbox hardware, though without actually naming it “Xbox Series X|S.” The second features a QR code inviting users to upgrade. Neither ad links to anything though as clicking does nothing. Still, it’s enough to get people speculating: Could this mean more updates are coming? Is this a hint of something bigger? A marketing test? Or maybe just a rogue employee having a bit of fun?

Interestingly, this update doesn’t seem to be worldwide. Reports have mainly come from users in the United States and the UK, where the update applied automatically. One Redditor from Brazil, however, noted that nothing changed for him until he signed in with a U.S.-based Xbox account, which triggered the new dashboard layout.
As of now, Microsoft hasn’t made any public statement about the update (if we can call it an update since the dashboard version number didn’t change). We’re skeptical they ever will actually.
Still, it’s pretty cool to see a legendary console get some attention this far into its retirement. Whether it’s a glitch, a hidden test, or just a bit of backend maintenance that went public, the result is a sleeker dashboard and one more reason for Xbox 360 fans to smile. The 360 may not be the future of gaming anymore but moments like this prove it’s far from forgotten.
