Sometimes, all it takes is 60 seconds to grab your attention. Described as an unlikely love letter to Shenmue and Sega Bass Fishing, About Fishing promises a truly strange adventure. Part fishing sim, part narrative mystery, this new title from the creator of Arctic Eggs is already intriguing the community.
An Atmosphere That’s as Relaxing as It Is Unsettling
The project is shaping up to be a delightfully weird experience. What starts as a laid-back fishing trip with family quickly veers into the unknown.
The trailer features a series of enigmatic sequences. We see the young angler, clad in her signature yellow raincoat, visiting her father in prison.
Other scenes show the meticulous cutting of a fish or an encounter with a mermaid. The official description calls it a “fishing and mystery game blending the quiet, meditative rhythm of fishing with the silent tension of discovery.”
Much More Than Just a Fishing Simulator
Rest assured, the “fishing game” aspect is very real and seems solid. Each catch has its own patterns and behaviors you’ll need to learn.
The game offers genuine progression. You’ll need to cast your line, trade your catches, upgrade your gear, and explore new depths.
But this ancient practice also serves as a narrative engine. Every cast is a chance to discover the unexpected.
The fish you catch becomes your guide. It helps you piece together fragments of a mystery long submerged, leaving you to choose between the calm of the water and the pursuit of clues.
A Distinct Shenmue Influence
This is where the Shenmue reference makes perfect sense. The world around you is alive and changes depending on the time and weather.
Fish hide, and the town evolves every day. Most importantly, the inhabitants follow their own daily routines.
Everyone you meet has their own memories and moments of happiness. Their lives unfold around you, deepening the immersion in this place that slowly becomes your own.
The Playtest Available on Steam
Behind this singular project is Kevin Brown, the author of the very strange Arctic Eggs. As a reminder, that title asked players to cook eggs in a prison in Antarctica.
He is supported by artist Angel Perez Guzman and composer Cameron Ginex. The game is published by Playstack and will also be released on PlayStation 5, though no date has been set yet.
Good news for the curious: a playtest is open to everyone on Steam. It allows you to explore the game’s universe for about twenty minutes.
