At a recent auction, a copy of Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64 console was sold for a world record price, making it the most expensive video game ever.

On July 11, 2021, the classic video game, Mario 64, was sold at auction for an incredible price of $1.56 million.
The game, originally released as a launch title for the Nintendo 64 console in 1996, was described by Heritage Auctions as significant and essential to the history of video games.
Mario 64 is the best-selling and best-rated video game on the Nintendo 64, but what makes this copy of the game so special is that it’s unsealed and in perfect condition.
The auction house had given the game a rating of 9.8 A++, meaning it is in near-perfect condition with its seal intact.
Another version of Mario 64, with a rating of 9.6 A++, sold at the same auction for the considerably lower price of $13.200.
So, before you go searching through your drawers for your copy of the game, unless it’s still in its original box and unopened, you’re probably not going to get the same price for selling it.
Incredibly, the previous record for a video game was set just two days before, on July 9.
That record was for an original cartridge of the Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), which sold for $870,000.
The copy of Legend of Zelda held a rating of 9.0 A++ and is one of the best-selling and most critically-acclaimed video games that Nintendo has ever released.
The particular copy of Zelda that sold is one of the first to be made in an early production run and is the earliest sealed copy that anyone could wish to buy.
