Marathon Still Hopes to Release by March 2026, Says Bungie and Sony
Bungie and Sony are still expecting to launch the upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, this financial year, which means a release date by the end of March 2026.
The troubled FPS was delayed indefinitely last year following Marathon‘s initial reveal and early Alpha playtests. However, Sony and Bungie’s confirmation of an upcoming release will delight fans who have waited patiently for the game since its 2023 announcement.
In the latest Sony quarterly earnings report, CFO Lin Tao assured fans that both Sony and Bungie remain “fully committed” to launching the first-person shooter by the end of March 2026, when the financial year ends.
Bungie Delays, Playtests, and New Release Date for Marathon
Marathon has had a rough time in development, with Bungie delaying the shooter indefinitely in June, following what the company called “passionate” feedback from fans. A plagiarism scandal in May, in which Bungie admitted to using unsolicited material, only dampened the game’s expectations and the developer’s reputation.
Following the initial playtests, Bungie has conducted a few more closed testing sessions to improve the game’s AI, combat mechanics, visuals, and overall gameplay experience. With these enhancements, hopefully now made, Sony’s Tao says the company “will assume” Marathon will launch this financial year.

Marathon is Bungie’s return to one of its oldest franchises, which launched for the Apple Macintosh in 1994. The FPS has been re-envisioned as a PvP-focused extraction shooter where players compete for loot and complete challenges before successfully escaping the map.
Unlike Destiny 2, Marathon shifts the focus entirely to fast-paced, competitive survival in loot-driven firefights, with the developer stepping away from the narrative-driven experience.
The game retains the signature sci-fi aesthetic and deep lore of the original 1990s franchise while modernizing it with Bungie’s renowned mechanics, promising a visually stunning and challenging experience.

Sony has confirmed that Marathon will be released by March 2026, reassuring fans that the game’s recent delay and internal restructuring at Bungie have been sufficient to ensure its launch in the coming months.
