Koei Tecmo just confirmed a massive win for the Zelda franchise. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment has officially crossed the 1 million sales mark worldwide. This milestone arrives less than three months after its November 2025 launch on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Hyrule Warriors Sales Milestone
The publisher revealed the data in their latest financial report released this morning. Achieving 1 million copies sold combines both physical and digital downloads globally.
This number is particularly impressive given the hardware constraints. unlike its predecessor, this title is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. With the new console’s install base still growing, a 25% attach rate (estimated) signals that early adopters are hungry for Hyrule lore.

Age of Imprisonment: The TotK Connection
The game tackles the “Imprisoning War,” a pivotal event referenced heavily in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It fills the narrative gaps that fans have debated since 2023.
While Age of Calamity previously hit 4 million sales, that title launched on a mature Switch ecosystem with over 80 million users at the time. Context matters here. Age of Imprisonment is outpacing expectations relative to the current Switch 2 market penetration.
The project moved fast. Producer Yosuke Hayashi pitched the concept to Nintendo immediately after finishing Tears of the Kingdom during its launch weekend. That creative spark clearly translated into sales momentum.

Verdict: Is Age of Imprisonment Essential?
If you own a Switch 2, the library is still building, making this a standout technical showcase. The “Musou” combat isn’t for everyone, but the narrative weight it adds to the Zelda timeline makes it mandatory playing for lore hunters.
The combat feels tighter than previous entries, and the visuals finally hit a steady 60FPS on the new hardware. It is a solid purchase for anyone who wants to see the Imprisoning War firsthand rather than just reading about it in TotK.
Did you pick up Age of Imprisonment for the lore, or are you just here to smash through thousands of Bokoblins?
