Fans of Dauntless Recommends NOT Playing The Game After Steam Launch Awakening Update

Dauntless is a free-to-play online action RPG developed by Phoenix Labs, first released in May 2019. The game lets players hunt down massive creatures known as Behemoths in a co-op multiplayer setting, often compared to the popular Monster Hunter series. Initially launched on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, Dauntless later expanded to platforms like Nintendo Switch and Steam.
In December 2024, the game underwent a significant change with the “Awakening” update, coinciding with its Steam launch. This update included major changes to progression systems, gameplay mechanics, and monetization strategies, sparking intense debate and widespread criticism among its player base. Despite the intent to revitalize the experience, the update has faced backlash for disrupting the established gameplay structure and alienating long-time fans.
Dauntless Bad Review and Awakening Feedback
The community’s reaction has been overwhelmingly negative and so players have taken to Steam, social media, and forums to express their dissatisfaction. On Steam, the game’s reviews have plummeted to an “Overwhelmingly Negative” rating as players vent their frustrations. Social media platforms are flooded with posts advising others to avoid the game in its current state, and some players have even called for a complete rollback of the Awakening update to restore the previous version of the game.
One of the most detrimental updates was when nearly all weapons, except Exotics, were removed, effectively resetting much of current players’ hard-earned progress. Longtime fans who spent considerable time crafting and upgrading their equipment feel alienated by this. And rightly so.
The update also replaced the previous Reforge mechanic with a new leveling system for weapons and armor. While intended to streamline gameplay, this change disrupted the established gameplay flow that many players had grown accustomed to.
Another “unwelcomed” feature is the introduction of Canisters, a loot-box-style mechanic. Critics argue that the move prioritizes revenue generation over player experience, further souring the reception of the update.
Phoenix Labs Statement Over Dauntless Reviews
Phoenix Labs, the developers of Dauntless, have acknowledged the community backlash and stated their intention to address player concerns. In a public statement, they explained that the changes were designed to improve the overall experience but admitted that the implementation may have fallen short of expectations. They have committed to monitoring player feedback closely and making adjustments where necessary to rebuild trust with the community.
