All of these experiences, the good and the bad, are massively important! It was horrible to read of how I failed my group, but it also motivated me to try again and to try and do better (though I still refuse to harm others just to improve my standing). The game is a compelling piece of storytelling and a wonderful exploration of empathy.

This War of Mine shows, like many recent indie games, that you don’t need to have a big budget or a big team to be creative and invent an engaging experience. It shows you don’t need to have a game grand in scale, directed and complicated in narrative, or beautiful in graphics to convey the deepest of emotions. It shows the real horrors men and women go through in war, and it does it in an elegantly simple way.

This War of Mine delivers a setting that is depressing and unsettling. It’s a slow-paced resource management strategy game that will hang over you long after you walk away from it. Admittedly, it tip-toes into being melodramatic at times, and the controls could benefit from some hotkeys to back up the point-and-click interface.
