Sunset is a narrative-driven first person adventure/simulation game developed and published by Tale of Tales. It centers on finding clues on the story that takes place as you play the game. The game is inspired by war-themed action games and tells the story in the perspective of an NPC.
The game is set in the late sixties, and the main character is Angela Burnes, a US citizen who travels to the then socialist republic of Anchuria to learn more about egality. A military coup ensues during her visit which prevented her from leaving the country. The new regime refuses to recognize her university degree, and thus she is forced to work as a housekeeper to sustain herself.
Her brother, David (who later joins her in Anchuria), on the other hand, ends up joining an underground resistance movement. Angela finds employment through a former art curator, Gabriel Ortega, who recently got separated with his wife due to resistance from the new government’s offer of giving affluent citizens safety and power. You will work as his housekeeper, and your work starts an hour before sunset, once in a week.
As the story progresses, you not only get to know your employer by rummaging through his stuff, but also find yourself sucked into a rebellious plot against the government.
Sunset features a cool 1972 atmospheric art style. The game allows players to influence the relationship between the two main characters (Angela and Gabriel) as well as interact with the environment in order to unlock the rest of the game’s story. The game’s environment is also responsive – you get to tinker with light switches, record players, and other electronic gadgets.
