Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is a third-person action-adventure game developed by EA Games a video game adaptation of the movie of the same name Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger venture out into the wizarding world on their own to find and destroy Lord Voldemort’s remaining Horcruxes. On their journey, they will encounter dangers beyond their imaginings like Death Eaters, Snatchers, and so much more.
By focusing on the simple joys of exploring Hogwarts and casting spells, EA almost came within reach of making its last two entries entertaining. With Deathly Hallows, Harry regretfully returns to his roots by offering atrocious gameplay that no fan could enjoy. Like a Quidditch player falling from a broomstick mid-match, this installment loses all forward momentum and goes plummeting toward a faceplant at top speed.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is an easy game to forget. Shooting bad guys with little context is enjoyable for a while, but soon enough it becomes impossible to ignore the same problematic aspects present in the last few Harry Potter games–occasionally bad camera, bugs, and a distinct lack of narrative cohesion–resulting in a barely there adventure that does little justice to the source material. The action is functional, but not particularly satisfying, and the elements that represent the core appeal–the story, characters and universe–fail to live up to the Harry Potter name.
There’s one thing I like about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – when Dementors are near, the screen ices over at the edges; that’s quite cool. Everything else is awful – even Harry, Ron and Hermione’s limp-wristed spell-casting animation looks half-hearted. It’s an insult to the fiction, an insult to the increasingly good films, and an insult to bad videogames.
