Borderlands 4 Release Date – It’s Coming Sooner Than Expected
Initially planned for September 23, the release date of Borderlands 4 has been moved forward by Gearbox due to fast development progress. The shooter will now officially launch on September 12, 2025.
The date was confirmed during PlayStation’s February 2025 State of Play, and players worldwide can access it on release day, except on one major platform (see below).
Platforms – Where You Can Play Borderlands 4
Borderlands 4 is coming to PS5, PC (Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. However, the Switch 2 version will launch later, with no current release date.
Unfortunately, there is no last-gen support, as the game is built using Unreal Engine 5, with Gearbox targeting next-gen hardware online. It’s not a surprise, as Randy Pitchford previously hinted at this via social media, praising the engine’s capabilities.
Borderlands 4 Gameplay – Four New Vault Hunters & Faster Action
There are four new Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4, and they are Vex (Siren), Rafa (Exo-Soldier), Harlowe (Grabitar), and Amon (Forgeknight).
Set on a brand-new, war-torn planet, the game features the series’ recognizable chaotic action and abundance of loot. There are new weapons, enhanced mobility, and team-based or solo combat for up to four players.
The main villain is Timekeeper, a ruthless tyrant who controls the prison planet of Kairos through fear and violence. Players will go up against the dictator and his followers with more mobility options than ever, as combat is faster and flashier, and environments are dynamic.
Pre-Orders – Prices and Editions Revealed
Digital pre-orders for Borderlands 4 are live on Steam, Microsoft Store, and PlayStation Store. There are also physical editions available via:
- UK: Amazon (£59.99), Smyths (£59.99), GAME (£69.99)
- US: Amazon ($69.99), GameStop ($69.99), Target ($69.99)
The Deluxe and Super Deluxe Editions are also available to pre-purchase, which you can read about on Steam. The Gilded Glory Pack is available to anyone who pre-orders the game and includes a weapon skin, Vault Hunter skin, Echo-4 Drone skin, and a head for all four Vault Hunters.
Trailer Breakdown – First Look and Release Confirmation
The first Borderlands 4 trailer dropped in February 2025 during the PlayStation State of Play. The trailer showcased the four new Vault Hunters in action, dozens of new weapons, glimpses at the main villain, Timekeeper, and fast-paced combat and team synergy.
At a time when many developers and publishers are delaying their games, Gearbox has bucked the industry trend, launching Borderlands 4 ahead of its initial release date on September 12, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. A Switch 2 release will follow at a later date.
