About this game

Recompile is an action-adventure platforming game with Metroidvania elements developed by UK-based Phigames, it’s a story taking place inside an ancient dying mainframe about a rogue AI program that’s refusing to be deleted. Explore and discover the mainframe’s many hidden secrets beneath its old surface, uncover the truth behind the mainframe’s purpose, and the hypervisor’s; fight, hack, and survive in this sprawling digital landscape, but be careful your actions have consequences the game has multiple endings based on your actions. • The denizens of the Mainframe are strange and diverse, many of them are inherently hostile, use a full complement of weapons and abilities to defend yourself and survive.
• Hacking is an essential part of the game; many parts of the mainframe can be tampered with, nothing is hardcoded, everything is systemic and fully exploitable. Locked doors, forcefields, elevators, and many spawning systems can all be backdoored by hacking their logic gates even the inhabitants themselves are not safe their programming can be bent to your will.

Reviews

While I wasn’t much of a fan of the backtracking and not knowing what upgrades I got or missed, or its clumsy combat, Recompile still gave me a unique gaming experience I’m glad to have had. Its visuals are gorgeous at times, even with its minimalistic style, and while the story isn’t told in a traditional way, I quite enjoyed its concept.
