Released in 2019 with mixed success, Daymare: 1998 finds a sequel nonetheless with Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle. It’s a 3rd-person survival horror narrative game. The player takes on the role of a government agent, exploring unfriendly locations to find answers and eradicate vermin. The game promises a terrifying atmosphere, both in terms of visuals and soundtrack. We get the impression that the game relies more on atmosphere and enigma than on gameplay, but there’s a relatively modern arsenal to accompany us as we slaughter the monsters we encounter, who should give us a hard time, according to the promises. Finally, accompanied by our radar, we have environmental puzzles to solve, so keep your eyes peeled. Hidden objects and secrets are also on the menu. Here’s hoping that the horrific side of the game is successful and that the story is worth the effort!

Daymare 1994 Sandcastle is the prequel and new entry to the 2019 Invader Studios’ Daymare: 1998, a pretty ambitious project by a small indie team with the objective of bringing the classic survival and zombie formula popularized by the earlier Resident Evil series, and combining it with modern visuals and a different story. Unfortunately the release of Resident Evil 2 remake, killed its momentum combined with a few problems due to the nature of the indie team. Despite that there have been a positive feedback and interest in the community which appreciated Invader Studios effort.

Now with Sandcastle the team has to live up to expectations as the gaming scene is not as before with plenty of other games inspired by the same formula, as well as Capcom having released the 3 and 4 remake.

As a prequel, the game takes place 4 years before Daymare 1998, this time we’ll have Dalila Reyes as the protagonist, a special agents with experience as a government spy working for the H.A.D.E.S., now being deployed into one of the most secret laboratory of the USA conducting extremely advanced and dangerous experimentations. But somethings has gone horribly wrong and the team is tasked to investigate.

Here our protagonist will face never seen horrors and dangers around every corner, with a new improved UI and especially a revised inventory system, new characters to and returning faces from Daymare 1998. Visuals have been polished, especially characters models and facial animations, as well as making enemies more terrifying. The biggest weapon reveal has been the ability to freeze enemies with an experimental weapon we find in the labs, aiding us during tense combats sequences stalling an enemy into place while facing others, or to easily blow off body parts in a single shot.

With new puzzles, better implemented into the story, a slight more polish to the overall game and hopefully a much more intriguing story now that Sandcastle face a fierce competitions, many are somewhat optimistic about the game hoping the developers manage to deliver a solid experience at launch.
