The Belgian Gaming Commission, Belgium’s gambling authority, is currently running an investigation on Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Overwatch. The investigation focuses on the two games’ loot boxes. The Commission aims to determine whether obtaining loot boxes is a form of gambling.

Obtaining loot boxes may be considered as games of chance, thus the Gaming Commission requires a permit.

According to Belgian Gaming Commission director Peter Naessens, if a player’s ability to succeed in the game depends on random outcomes, as is the case of loot boxes, the Commission considers this as a game of chance.

“If there is a game of chance, it is not possible without a permit from the Gaming Commission,” Naessens added.

Should the Gaming Commission find both games’ loot boxes as “games of chance,” EA and Blizzard may face fines amounting to hundreds of thousands of Euros. They may even see both games removed from store shelves.

Do you think the Belgian Gaming Commission is right for investigating both games? Are loot boxes really considered as “games of chance?” Let us know in the comments!
