PS5 Preorder

What is the PlayStation 5?

The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s next-generation console.

When will the PS5 release?

The official release date of the PS5 is November 12 for the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Mexico, and South Korea. The rest of the world will have to wait until November 19 for the release in their region.

Demand for Sony’s latest console has been unsurprisingly high since its reveal date on June 11. Recent pre-orders sold out instantly, with websites crashing due to the volume of people trying to grab one.

Whether you already have one or waiting for the next round of pre-orders to become available, let’s jump into what you can expect from the PS5.

What are PS5’s specs?

The PlayStation 5 releases with an AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz, 16GB of GDDR6 memory, and a custom RDNA 2 GPU capable of 10.28 TFLOPs of processing power.

The PS5 also comes with a Solid State Drive (SSD) for fast loading and a 4K HD Blu-ray player.

The PS5 is a gaming beast, and below are the official specs in full:

  • CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)
  • GPU: Custom RDNA 2 – 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency)
  • Memory: 16GB GDDR6/256-bit RAM, 448GB/s
  • Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
  • Expandable storage: NVMe SSD Slot, USB HDD support
  • Optical drive: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

PlayStation 5: Standard Edition vs. Digital Edition

The PlayStation 5 launches with two editions available: the Standard Edition and the Digital Edition.

PS5 STANDARD VS DIGITAL

What’s the difference between PS5 Standard and PS5 Digital?

The Standard Edition is precisely that, the standard version of the console with all the features expected.

The Digital Edition is a streamlined version of the Standard Edition. It comes without a disc drive and can only play games downloaded digitally.

Those who purchase the Digital Edition need not worry as every PlayStation 5 game will have a digital edition on the PlayStation Store.

It’s a perfect time to introduce a digital-only edition console, too, with digital sales overtaking physical sales on console for the first time in history, due in part to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

How Much Will the PS5 Cost?

Sony has set the price of the Standard PS5 at $499.99/€499.99/£449.99.

The PS5 Digital Edition will cost $399.99/€399.99/£359.99.

When and Where Can I Pre-order a PS5?

PS5 online pre-orders have not been easy to navigate, with websites crashing and stock selling out instantly.

If you want to know where you can pre-order a PS5 from next, well, you may be in luck with a third-wave of pre-orders rumored to be imminent.

Although the world is currently seeing a lack of PlayStation 5 availability, current rumors suggest that limited PS5 stock will become available in the US on October 16.

Stores such as Target, Walmart, and GameStop may start to see PlayStation 5s arrive in-store over the next couple of days.

Keep your eyes peeled on availability, including Amazon, Argos, Very, and Currys, as more stock could arrive within weeks with the console’s launch fast approaching.

Where can I buy the PlayStation 5?

PS5 Backwards Compatibility

PlayStation has already announced that you will be able to play your PS4 games on your PS5, whether you have the Standard of Digital Edition of the console.

The experience on both versions of the console is the same; however, the way you access your games may vary depending on the console you have, as you can see below:

PS5 Digital Edition

  • You will be able to play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games on the PS5 Digital Edition console. These will be compatible PS4 digital games you have already purchased or plan to purchase via PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web, or PlayStation mobile app.
  • Since there is no disc drive, you won’t be able to play your PS4 disc-based games on the PS5 Digital Edition.

PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive

  • You can play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games you downloaded from the PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web, or PlayStation mobile app.
  • You can also use physical PS4 game discs.

99% of all PlayStation titles will immediately be available to play on the PS5, including PlayStation VR games. That’s an incredible 4000+ games, such as Borderlands 3, Cyberpunk 2077, DOOM Eternal, and FIFA 21.

PlayStation 5 Exclusives

With the release of new consoles, inevitably, the conversation always turns to which console has the better exclusives.

The PS5 unsurprisingly has already had several confirmed exclusives announced, with more likely to be followed in the next few months.

These are the games so far confirmed, with more likely to follow. If we compare that to the PS4, which only had five confirmed exclusives at launch, we can see that the PS5 already looks like a great purchase.

Should I Buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X?

Of course, deciding on which console, whether Xbox or PlayStation, comes down to personal preference. To help you, we list a few of the differences below.

  • CPU – The Xbox Series X has a slightly higher clocked CPU at a marginally better 3.8 GHz frequency.
  • GPU – Slightly different once more, with Xbox sitting at 12 teraflops and PlayStation at 10.3 teraflops but with a slightly better frequency than the Xbox.
  • Storage – The Xbox has 1 TB storage, whereas the PS5 has 825 GB SSD. Both use cloud storage; however, the PS5 can process data at 5.5 GB per second compared to the Xbox, meaning faster load times.
  • Controllers – Xbox has announced that current-gen controllers will be compatible with the Xbox Series X. PS4 DualShock controllers will not work with PS5 games. Instead, the DualSense controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers replaces them.
  • Backwards Compatibility – You will be able to play most PS4 titles on the PS5. However, Xbox has gone one further and announced that the Xbox Series X would work with Xbox One and some Xbox 360 and Xbox Original titles.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles are very similar and often with new-generation consoles your preference may come down to habit and the games on offer.

Should I Buy a PS4 or Wait for a PS5?

Whether or not to buy the PlayStation 4 or the PlayStation 5 comes down to personal preference.

Prices for the PS4 are, of course, dropping, but recent checks suggest that you would still need to spend more than $250 for a new one, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition will cost $399.

If you want to play certain PS4 games, the knowledge that you can play most PS4 games on the PS5  may come as reassuring, particularly since those games may even look and perform better on the new console.

Upcoming PlayStation games will launch on both consoles, meaning you will not miss out on those Sony exclusive games.

Deciding on which to purchase is not an easy one and, in the end, may come down to the differences between them.

What Is the Difference Between the PS4 and PS5?

The PS5 packs a punch and is an improvement in every way over the PS4, and below we compare the specs of both.

PS4 Pro Specs:

  • CPU: 2.1GHz 8-Core AMD Jaguar
  • GPU: 4.2 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 911MHz
  • Memory: 8GB GDDR5 plus 1GB DDR3
  • Storage: 1TB HDD
  • Expandable storage: Internal HDD Slot
  • Optical drive: Blu-ray Drive

Once again, the PS5 specs:

  • CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)
  • GPU: Custom RDNA 2 – 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency)
  • Memory: 16GB GDDR6/256-bit RAM, 448GB/s
  • Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
  • Expandable storage: NVMe SSD Slot, USB HDD support
  • Optical drive: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Specs are great, but what exactly do these differences mean to us?

The PlayStation 5 is the first console to offer an HDMI 2.1 output, which means support for 4K 120Hz gaming, going up to 8K. That’s double the resolution and refresh rate of the PS4.

Sony has emphasized loading times with this next-generation console too. Thanks to the PS5’s custom SSD, load times have seen a speed of up to 18 times faster than the PS4.

Of course, every new generation of console has an improvement over the last. But, with things like support for 8K, which TVs have only recently been capable of, the PlayStation 5 could last a decade.

When Will the PS6 be Released?

The PlayStation 5 is yet to be released, but just how long will we have to wait until we see the PlayStation 6?

The first PlayStation launched in December 1994, the PlayStation 2 in 2000, PlayStation 3 in 2006, and the PS4 in 2013.

If we go off previous versions and how long they lasted, we could make an educated guess that the PS5 is likely to launch in roughly 6-8 years.

Although with the specs of the PS5, we can even say that this next console could last up to ten years before the next generation.
