Nintendo Confirms Purchase of Bandai Namco Studio That Helped Build Splatoon 3
Nintendo announced that it has acquired Bandai Namco Studios Singapore, co-developer of Splatoon 3, effective April 1, 2026.
It looks like Nintendo did a bit of its own Black Friday shopping this year, announcing the acquisition of Bandai Namco Studios Singapore. By April 2026, the studio will officially join Nintendo’s family of subsidiaries to strengthen the company’s in-house development capabilities.
Nintendo Acquires Bandai Namco Studio
The gaming industry is no stranger to studio closures, mergers, and acquisitions—but it’s relatively rare to see Nintendo involved in such moves. However, with the state of competition, technology, and fast consumerism, even the traditionally conservative Japanese giant has made several strategic moves in recent years. Nintendo previously acquired Monolith Soft, the team behind Xenoblade; Dynamo Pictures in 2022, now known as Nintendo Pictures; and most recently integrated Shiver Entertainment last year.
While Nintendo’s acquisition activity may seem quiet (or maybe just overshadowed by the high-profile Nintendo lawsuits everywhere), the company had already been in talks with Bandai Namco.
Announced on November 27th, Nintendo has reached an agreement to buy 80% of Bandai Namco Studio Singapore shares by April 1, 2026 and will be named Nintendo Studios Singapore. The remaining 20% shares will be acquired once operations have stabilized.
According to the announcement, the acquisition was for the purpose of strengthening its development structure and since the two parties already have an ongoing business relationship with past works, Nintendo chose the studio to take under its wing.
One of the most notable collaborations between the two is Splatoon 3 with Bandai Namco providing support with concept art, characters and environment models, and even animation. As a support studio, they also did some work with Nintendo on titles including Mario Sports Superstars and New Pokemon Snap. According to reports, the studio is also part of the original dev team behind Metroid Prime 4, before Retro Studios took over.
While they get ready for the actual acquisition next year, hopefully, they’re also finalizing the announcement of Splatoon 4. It’s time.
